Temple Balsall Cemetery

Temple Balsall Cemetery

History

The parish cemetery was established in 1920 when the burial ground for the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Temple Balsall became full. Two acres of land were purchased from the Governors of the Foundation of Lady Katherine Leveson at a cost of £50. A lych-gate in memory of the men of Balsall who had died during the Great War was erected and the cemetery was consecrated by the Bishop of Birmingham in 1921.

Sadly the lych-gate was often to be a subject of controversy for one reason or another. In 1921 someone had stolen the ribbon off the memorial wreath - the Parish Council arranged for 'the Temple School children to be interrogated'. In 1937 the British Legion complained that birds were nesting in the gate surround. In 1970 the Parish Council decided the gate should no longer be locked at sunset.

An extension measuring a quarter of an acre was laid out in 1970. A further extension of almost two acres has now been landscaped.

Location

The cemetery is located in Temple Lane, Temple Balsall, between Knowle and Balsall Common.
Temple Lane is by a very sharp bend on the road that goes directly between Knowle and Balsall Common, the B4101.
The cemetery does not have a car park. If you are visiting when the cemetery is quiet, then there is a small pull-off on the road in front of the cemetery gate that you can use to park. If you know the cemetery is likely to be busy as you are attending a burial, then you are advised to park in the car park situated nearby in Fen End Road by the Lady Katherine Leveson Primary School.
A footpath known as "The Breadwalk" runs behind the school and behind the Foundation of Lady Katherine Leveson towards St Mary the Virgin Church and onto the cemetery.
You are advised to wear strong, flat shoes, especially in inclement weather as the cemetery is very rural in nature and does not have much cover from the elements.

If using a Sat Nav, the post code B93 0AL will get you very close to the cemetery.
